One thing I recall from the Baby Book my parents kept for me, under “Baby’s First Phrase”, were the words “Corn and Beans”. Yes, those were my first ideas that I began stringing together. You can imagine how exciting this time of year is for me?!
The Native American Iroquois added a third, Squash, to that combination, known to them as “The Three Sisters” and planted them altogether. The squash creates a ground cover to discourage weeds, and the corn grows tall, supporting the bean vines – Growing in Mutualism! I know I mutually enjoy these crops whether eaten together or separately.
